Abstract

A correct design of public policies aimed at the agricultural sector requires adequate diagnoses of its current situation and characteristics, given the relevance of the sector in the country's economy. Agricultural censuses represent one of the most important sources of information for these diagnoses, since, they extensively cover a wide range of aspects, including the number and areas of farms, the different forms of land tenure, farmed land distribution, livestock herds and crop types, the provision of capital goods, and the number of workers employed, among other variables that are significant when addressing any analysis of the agricultural sector. However, in Argentina, these agricultural censuses have not always revealed indisputable results, and in some cases it becomes necessary to make recourse to other sources
of information. This study explores the most important characteristics of the agricultural sector in Tucumán, aas revealed by the last three agricultural censuses carried out in the country, while contrasting some variables with data from other sources of information.
